Parakrama Samudra, also known as the Sea of Parakrama, is a vast man-made reservoir built by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century. It is one of the largest ancient irrigation works in Sri Lanka, covering an area of about 22 square kilometers. The reservoir reflects the engineering brilliance of the ancient Sinhalese and remains vital for agriculture in the region. The king’s famous saying, “Not even a drop of water should flow into the ocean without being made useful to man”, is linked with this marvel.
